Be still… and the world will come to you

Be still… and the world will come to you

A quiet lesson from a master of patience, the Giant Asian Mantis

Mr. Dabadee-dabadaa

I see you rushing… always rushing. Chasing, grasping, believing that life must be taken by force. Come, sit with me. I am the Giant Asian Mantis. I do not chase life. I wait for it. Stillness is not weakness. It is power, refined. Look at me… or rather, try to. My green form dissolves into leaf and shadow, and at times I wear shades of brown when the world around me dries and fades. This is not mere camouflage. It is awareness made visible. When you understand your surroundings, you become part of them… and when you belong, you are both hidden and in control. You speak of opportunity as though it is rare. To me, it is constant. I remain motionless, my raptorial forelegs folded in quiet readiness, barbed and patient. And then… a careless insect drifts too close. A bee, a grasshopper, even something larger than you might expect. In a single breath, I move. Swift. Exact. There is no second attempt, because there is no need. You think power is in size. Yet I, no larger than your hand, can take what I need because I understand timing.

Fun Facts

My head… you notice it now. Triangular, yes, but more importantly, free. I turn it with ease, seeing the world not in fragments, but in awareness. My eyes do not simply look… they judge distance, movement, intention. To observe properly is to act correctly. You fear stillness because you think nothing is happening. But even in stillness, I am calculating. Even in silence, I am prepared. You fear solitude. I embrace it. I do not gather, I do not follow. My path is my own. From egg to hunter, I require no teacher beyond instinct. Even my beginning… in an ootheca with many eggs. There was no one to teach or to guide. Survival begins early. Only the aware endure. And yes… there is a truth you may resist. Life feeds on life. I do not hunt with anger. I do not consume with guilt. Even among my kind, there are moments where survival outweighs connection. This is not cruelty. This is balance. To accept this is to understand life as it is, not as you wish it to be. So I ask you… must you always be moving? Must you always be seen? Be still. Become the leaf. Become the shadow. Watch everything. Miss nothing. And when your moment comes… do not rush it. Simply… strike.

Story of the Photo

A master of stillness in the wild spaces of Yala National Park, the Giant Asian Mantis is often overlooked despite its striking presence. This patient hunter was spotted inside the Mahoora Tented Safari Camp in Yala, perfectly poised among the foliage, its leaf-like form blending seamlessly into the greens around it. This serene encounter was captured by a Mahoora Naturalist.
