“Shhh! SHHHHHH! Not so loud! Do you mind? I was just about to make my move. Come closer if you must, but quietly… quietly! And whatever you do, don’t step on that twig. Yes, that one. Thank you. Now, stay right there. See that spot below in the water? No, no, don’t point! Just… look. There’s something moving, do you see? Right… this is why I sit perfectly still. You might think I’m just posing for your photograph, but I assure you, I am working. One flick at the wrong moment, one unnecessary whisper from you, and my lunch disappears… which, I might add, has happened before. Now watch carefully. I wait… I track…and then, in one quick dive…”
He pauses.
“…actually, hold that thought. You just breathed a bit too loudly. Yes, yes, I know what you’re thinking. How can something so small be so dramatic? I may only be about the size of your palm, but this,” he gestures slightly towards the water with his bright orange beak, “is precision work. And before you ask, no, I don’t only eat fish like my larger cousins. I prefer insects, frogs, and the occasional tiny lizard. A more refined menu. And I catch them the same way every time. Stillness… timing… speed. You, on the other hand, are all noise and movement… no offence.”
“You’re quite lucky, you know. I don’t usually entertain visitors. I prefer the deeper parts of the forest. Quiet streams, shaded corners, places where the light filters through just enough to make me… well… stand out a little. Which is ironic, really. All these colours, and yet most of you walk right past me. But that’s how I like it. Less disturbance equals more successful lunches. Oh, and since you’re here… quietly… let me share a few things. When it’s time to raise a family, we dig a little tunnel into a riverbank. Cosy, hidden, practical. Not too deep, just enough to keep everything safe from curious eyes… and clumsy feet. Once the eggs hatch, it’s all work, no posing. Back and forth, back and forth, bringing food, keeping watch, making sure everything runs smoothly. No shortcuts there. Also, I’ve only got three toes. Yes, three. Efficient, like everything else I do. Alright… this is it! Don’t move. Don’t speak. Don’t even think too loudly. …there!”
A flash. Gone. Back again.
“…and that,” he says, with quiet satisfaction, “is how it’s done. You may breathe now. But gently. I believe I saw something else moving…”
Deep within the lush stillness of the Sinharaja Rain Forest, well known for its remarkable birdlife, moments like this unfold in near silence. Captured by a Mahoora Naturalist whilst guiding guests from Explorer by Eco Team on a walking safari, this tiny burst of colour paused just long enough for a photograph as he focused on the hunt below.
